Today, the sea smelled different.
Wider. Wilder. Full of faraway thoughts.
Today was not a day for playing.
Today was a day for voyaging.

Baby Turtle barely slept the night before.
She'd wiggled under her blanket of sea moss,
twirled her straw hat in her flippers,
and whispered to herself,
"Tomorrow I sail across the sea."

As the first rays of dawn shimmered across the waves,
she gulped down a quick breakfast of seaweed curls,
then zipped straight to the shore,
her little heart fluttering like a jellyfish in sunlight.

She didn't even wait.
She dove into the water,
swam to the meeting place,
and called:
"Mr. Dolphin! Mr. Dolphin!"

A splash. A swirl. A sleek leap. "Baby Turtle?" he chirped, blinking.
"What are you doing up so early?"

"Today's the day," she beamed.
"I'm going on a trip to visit my faraway cousins!"

"Oh, right! But that's so far away.
How will you even get there?" he asked, puzzled.

She laughed and spun in the water.
"It's Half Moon Season!
Mr. Whale will be passing by, and he always helps us travel.
Papa says they've been friends since forever."

Mr. Dolphin blinked.
"The Mr. Whale? The big one who sings to the stars?"

"That's him!" she smiled.
"And today, we ride the waves on his back!"

Long ago, before Baby Turtle was even an egg in the sand,
Mr. Whale had once been hurt,
a jagged coral stuck deep in his belly.
Most creatures were too afraid to help.
But her father, brave and slow and kind,
pulled it free with care and grit.

Mr. Whale never forgot.
And every Half-Moon since,
He swam by the island like clockwork,
to carry his friend's family wherever they wished to go.

Suddenly... SPLASH!
A tidal wave of joy!
Mr. Whale burst from the deep like a living island,
crashing down with such force
that the shoreline trembled
and Baby Turtle's mother cried out, laughing,
"Oh Mr. Whale! You're enormous and still just a child inside!"

Mr. Whale's laugh rolled like thunder over the sea.
"Yes ma'am! Guilty as charged!"

His smile was so big
it could've been its own coastline.

Baby Turtle's parents climbed aboard,
carrying satchels of dried kelp, coral gifts, and hugs.

Mr. Dolphin swam closer.
"You'll come back, right?" he asked softly.

Baby Turtle paused.
Then swam close and hugged him with both flippers.

"Of course I will.
And I'll bring you stories.
Big ones. Whale-sized."

He nodded, though his eyes shimmered a little.
She had never gone so far away before.

"Bon voyage," he whispered.

"Merci," she said, smiling through the spray.

Then, with a push of a mighty tail,
Mr. Whale glided forward,
slicing the ocean like a song on the wind.

Mister Dolphin tried to follow.
One flip, two flips, three!
But even he, the fastest of friends,
couldn't keep up with the whale's rhythm.

Still, he followed for as long as he could,
until they vanished into the blue horizon,
a turtle, a whale, and a dream on the move.
